The Mihrab -(Prayer Niche)
this is a 9 page segment from an unknown publication.
The mihrab is the focal point in the interior of a mosque. It is located in the qibla wall, which is oriented toward Mecca, the holy city of Islam. Muslims face such a wall when praying. An inscription frieze is sometimes located across the top of a qibla wall.

It is mainly the liturgical qibla axismade visible. It is an early innovation in Islamic architecture, and its origins have been the object of controversy. It entered Islamic world in 707- 9 as a concave shape. This fashioned masonry, is a niche in the qibla wall similar to those in the coptic churches, with difference beimg that what had been a devotional niche; now became directional.

Mihrab isan acoustic device, a resonator for the voice, shaped to bounce the sound back and magnify it at the same time. The concave mihrab is where the imam( theprayer leader) stations himself to lead the congregation in prayers, therefore it wasn’t fortuitous innovation but the consequence of an order that the Muslims overseers must have given the copts. The niche tappers inward from bothsides to 1.30 m, and they meet in the middle at a 20 cm wide and 2 m highglass block, which allows defused light,not direct, to penetrate. This soft light will illuminate the niche internally. The philosophy is to create an ethereal environment and to direct the worshippers to that passage of light. Light has always been an essential concept in Islam as a religion, as well as an art and architecture, it symbolizes faith and sacredness. As described in the Holly Qur’aan “ God is the light of the heavens and the earth. The parable of his light is as if there was a niche and within it a lamb, the lamb enclosed in glass, the glass as if a brilliant star, lit from a blessed tree, an olive neither of the East not the West, whose oil illuminates although fire has not touched it, light upon light. God guides whom he will to his light, God set forth parables for man and God is all knowing.” Sourat 24 “ The Light,” verse(35). Promptly, the Mihrab became the central feature of any mosque, and of all sacred art and architecture in Islam. It has little in common with the Alter of a Christian church; indeed, in all essential respects it is its antithesis. Where as an Altar is convex, or at least protuberant, the mihrab is concave and this concavity is a symbolism of which requires that it bekept empty at all times, and opposes itself aesthetically to the cluttered surface of an Altar mensa. It is not the niche thatis sacred but the direction it expresses.I tried to take advantage of the qibla wall thickness, which is 1.50 m, and to cutinto the wall. Traditionally, mihrab was always a decorative element. It has always been exposed to ornamentation and decoration, and treated as ansculptural element. The intention was to create a simplefeature that stands out by its simplicity not by its decoration, and to introduce itself as a directional element, more than to distract the worshippers attention from their worship

The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture

The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture--so massive that it comes in its own plastic carrying case--is one of the rare publishing events that lives up to its hype. The book showcases 1,052 buildings completed since January 1998 with thousands of well-chosen color photographs plans, elevations, and cross-sections. Major elements of each project are described in elegantly succinct texts. Rather than simply pay lip service to the concept of "world" architecture, this book ranges throughout 75 countries on six continents. And although the big names in the field are here--Rafael Moneo and Herzog De Meuron are each represented by nine projects; Tadeo Ando with eight, Frank Gehry with six--the focus is on the ingenuity and diversity of contemporary architecture, regardless of the fame of its creator.The book's global view embraces many approaches, including experimental construction, neo-modernism, postmodernism, reinterpreted vernacular architecture and lingering traces of the International Style. While virtually every building type is included, from factories to museums, from lookout towers to train stations, the largest and most creative category is single family housing. Selected (as were all the projects) by a panel of leading architects, critics, scholars and others, these homes offer a tantalizing sense of what is possible, even on a modest budget. Grouped by country, the residences establish a sense of local context--from the elegant use of Scandinavian wood to the imaginative use of narrow plots of land in Tokyo. Fully indexed, with an array of maps and world data charts, The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture is destined to serve as a unique reference tool. But the geographic organization encourages you to just open the book anywhere and make a discovery--perhaps the surreal vision of Ake Larsson's Icehotel (carved from ice and snow), or the forest of Cor-ten steel pipes Jose ABP Forjaz used in the Mbuzini Memorial, or the startling shed forms of Rick Joy's Tubac House. --Cathy Curtis

Kendra Schank Smith, "Architect's Drawings: A selection of sketches by world famous architects through history "
Architectural Press; 1 edition (June 27, 2005) | ISBN:0750657197 | 224 pages | PDF | 10,4 Mb

The sketch is a window into the architects mind. As creative designers, architects are interested in how other architects, particularly successful ones, think through the use of drawings to approach their work. Historically designers have sought inspiration for their own work through an insight into the minds and workings of people they often regard as geniuses. This collection of sketches aims to provide this insight. Here for the first time, a wide range of world famous architects' sketches from the Renaissance to the present day can be seen in a single volume. The sketches have been selected to represent the concepts or philosophies of the key movements in architecture in order to develop an overall picture of the role of the sketch in the development of architecture. The book illustrates the work of designers as diverse as Andrea Palladio, Erich Mendelsohn, Sir Edwin Lutyens, Gianlorenzo Bernini, Le Corbusier, Michelangelo, Alvar Aalto, Sir John Soane, Francesco Borromini, Walter Gropius, and contemporary architects Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry to name but a few. Each chronologically placed sketch is accompanied by text providing details about the architects life, a look at the sketch in context, and the connection to specific buildings where appropriate. Style, media and meaning are also discussed, developing an explanation of the architects thinking and intentions.

As creative designers themselves, architects are interested in how other architects, particularly successful ones, think and draw and approach their work. Historically designers have sought inspiration for their own work through an insight into the minds and workings of people they often regard as geniuses. This collection of sketches aims to provide this insight.

Listed chronologically each sketch will be accompanied by a text which provides: A short synopsis/history of the architect's life; a look at the sketch in this context; the connection to a specific building (where appropriate); techniques of the sketch: style and media; meaning - what the sketch shows about the architect's thinking and intentions followed by a select bibliography for each section.

· Sketches from prominent architects, drawn from an international selection
· A unique insight into how architects use sketches to develop and transfer complex concepts into physical form, enabling readers to improve the connection between their own ideas and designs
· Reveals the secrets of the most successful sketching techniques used by architects for today's designers

How Designers Think, Fourth Edition: The Design Process Demystified By Bryan Lawson
* Publisher: Architectural Press
* Number Of Pages: 320
* Publication Date: 2005-11-30
* Sales Rank: 74913
* ISBN / ASIN: 0750660775
In this fourth edition, Bryan Lawson continues his discussion, trying to understand how designers think. He does this by mapping out the issues concerned with the design process, with design problems and solutions and design thinking. This edition adds to the previous debates by including a new chapter on 'Design as Conversation' reflecting on how designers, either consciously or unconsciously, monitor, reflect on, control and change their thinking. It also includes a new series of case studies on notable designers including the racing car designer Gordon Murray, product designer James Dyson, and architects such as Edward Cullinan and Glenn Murcott.

* A unique look at the psychology of the designer that provides a greater insight to the process of design
* 'Demystifies' the complexity of the subject and uncovers new ways that design can be done
* Conclusions are drawn from years of research and provide the very latest debate on the subject

An examination of all 6 buildings then the winner is announced in Building of the Year The RIBA Stirling Prize 2007
The Stirling Prize shortlist is out and while there will be those who carp that there are too many buildings outside the UK etc., Stirling remains by far the most important date in the UK architectural calendar. There is no other event that stimulates such debate about the value of architecture in this country. My gut reaction is that this is a shortlist poised between the iconic one-off and the accretive addition.

The most obviously, almost offensively, iconic is OMA's Casa da Música, a meteorite of a building fired like a mortar from Rotterdam and crash-landed on a square in Porto. What it has to do with British architecture should be obvious - Rem Koolhaas has lived in London since the 1960s, and is a major figure in this country's professional and intellectual landscape.

The other show pony on the list is David Chipperfield's America's Cup building in Valencia. It is a canny piece of stadium architecture and has been widely published. Glenn Howells' Savill Building is also in the icon category, with the overwhelming image of a building dependent on a wavy roof.

On the other side of the divide are buildings of meticulous modesty. Chipperfield's Museum of Modern Literature is an addition to a complex of buildings at the German literature archive in Marbach. Most of the building is dug into the hillside, behind minimal and beautiful concrete colonnades. Foster's Dresden Station is a comprehensive but pretty faithful rehabilitation of the eccentric original. Perhaps most modest of all, Haworth Tompkins' Young Vic Theatre still has its entrance through an old butcher's shop.

So for this year's judges it's either/or. There is no housing, no office, no public space. This year's Stirling is all about how you like

Book Description:
A superb visual reference to the principles of architecture
Now including interactive CD-ROM!
For more than thirty years, the beautifully illustrated Architecture: Form, Space, and Order has been the classic introduction to the basic vocabulary of architectural design. The updated Third Edition features expanded sections on circulation, light, views, and site context, along with new considerations of environmental factors, building codes, and contemporary examples of form, space, and order.

This classic visual reference helps both students and practicing architects understand the basic vocabulary of architectural design by examining how form and space are ordered in the built environment.? Using his trademark meticulous drawing, Professor Ching shows the relationship between fundamental elements of architecture through the ages and across cultural boundaries. By looking at these seminal ideas, Architecture: Form, Space, and Order encourages the reader to look critically at the built environment and promotes a more evocative understanding of architecture.

In addition to updates to content and many of the illustrations, this new edition includes a companion CD-ROM that brings the book's architectural concepts to life through three-dimensional models and animations created by Professor Ching

Built environment surrounds us for 90% of our lives but only now are we realising its influence on the environment, our health, and how we think, feel and behave both individually and socially.

Spirit & Place shows how to work towards a sustainable environment through socially inclusive processes of placemaking, and how to create places that are nourishing psychologically and physically, to soul and spirit as well as body.

This book's unique arguments identify important, but often unrecognised, principles and illustrate their applicability in a wide range of situations, price-ranges and climates. It shows how to reconcile the apparently incompatible demands of environmental, economic and social sustainability; how to moderate climate to make places of delight, and realign social pressures so places both support society and maximise economic viability. Thought provoking and easy to understand, Christopher Day uses everyday examples to relate his theories to practice and our experience.

* Learn from Day's 30 years experience of the ecological debate
* Provides important technical information regarding sustainability
* Comprehensively outlines the issues in an easy to understand and inspiring style

Together with the National Library of Ireland, Architectural Press presents seventy previously unpublished drawings by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The identification in the National Library of Ireland of three sketchbooks, from which these drawings have been selected, represents a significant addition to the body of early drawings by Mackintosh. The sketches date from a crucial period in the young man's development, spanning his highly successful student years and the beginnings of his professional career. Each of the three sketchbooks covers an area central to his growth as an artist: the architecture of his native Scotland, an important scholarship journey in Italy and, Mackintosh's first love and greatest influence, the study of plants and growing things.

Essentially private, these little known and unique works provide privileged access to significant moments in the artist's intellectual and emotional life. In this book Elaine Grogan attempts to take them out of the library display-case and bring them to life in the hands of the reader. She invites us to look over Mackintosh's shoulder on his early tentative steps towards fulfilment as a creative genius. Connections are traced, both backwards in time to his training and forwards to his great successes and eventual bitter eclipse.

* Gain a new understanding of a crucial period in Charles Rennie Mackintosh's development through these unpublished sketches
* Connect his sketch books of Scotland, Italy and botany to later great works
* Be inspired by these private, yet significant sketches

This collection of essays is concerned with the experiences children have within the supervised worlds they inhabit, as well as with architecture and landscape architecture.

International examples of innovative childcare practice are illustrated together with the design processes which informed their development. The emphasis here is on new and experimental childcare projects which set-out to reassert the rights of children to participate in a complex multi-faceted world, which is no longer available to them, unless under adult supervision. Research supports in depth recommendations regarding the ideal children's environment, across a range of contexts and dimensions.

Until recent times, the needs of children within the urban environment were largely ignored. There is little tradition and no broadly agreed contemporary architectural or landscape theory as to how children should be provided for, beyond a limited functional agenda.

There is a sense that architecture for childhood is not taken seriously; it is either whimsical and ephemeral or largely designed for adults, an adjunct to the more important business of adult needs and aspirations. Yet children access much of their education and development through play and social interaction with their childhood counterparts. The spaces in and around children"s daycare centres, schools, supervised parks and other dedicated children"s environments are the subject of this collection.

As more and more purpose designed buildings and gardens for children are opened, the need to listen to children and their carers is becoming more aparant. Mark Dudek gathers together a number of internationally recognized experts in the field of childcare environments to write about different aspects of the landscape. They have been chosen in particular because of their background in enquiring, research orientated work, both theoretical and practical. They listen to and watch children.

Contributors have considered the child"s environment as one which is secure and controlled yet offers additional environmental dimensions which extend developmental possibilities. Children often spend a great deal of time in daycare facilties and schools, as parents are absorbed in their own work and leisure activities. This places an emphasis on architects and planners to consider the needs of children in great detail. As such, the children"s environment must be conceived of as a rich, complex place; a "world within a world".

We use the word LANDSCAPE in recognition that children do not differentiate between the inside and the outside, private and public; every part of their perception is open to stimulation by a stimulating environment.

* Discover the impact of emerging childcare strategy on architecture and design internationally
* Learn from the broad knowledge of the well respected contributors

Well-grounded in the history and theory of Anglo-American urbanism, this illustrated textbook sets out objectives, policies and design principles for planning new communities and redeveloping existing urban neighborhoods. Drawing from their extensive experience, the authors explain how better plans (and consequently better places) can be created by applying the three-dimensional principles of urban design and physical place-making to planning problems.

Design First uses case studies from the authors own professional projects to demonstrate how theory can be turned into effective practice, using concepts of traditional urban form to resolve contemporary planning and design issues in American communities.

The book is aimed at architects, planners, developers, planning commissioners, elected officials and citizens -- and, importantly, students of architecture and planning -- with the objective of reintegrating three-dimensional design firmly back into planning practice.
•Focus and emphasis on planning by 3-D design
•Clear and practical presentation of how communities can improve their town planning processes

This is an important book, written by one of the top lighting designers in the country. Written at the end of a career as an architect and lighting designer, the book draws on the experience gained while living through a period of intense lighting development, from 1956 up to the millenium. It bridges the gap between the present day architect and lighting engineer, from the viewpoint of the 'independent lighting designer'.

'Lighting Modern Buildings' documents the part played by the independent lighting designer, leading to a greater understanding by architects and lighting engineers of the importance of lighting in architectural design.

The book starts with an exploration of the basic human needs of vision and the perception of our exterior world...the intellectual and the physical...since this is what lighting is all about. To do this, it is necessary to trace the development of daylight from earliest times up to the present day; the starting point for any lighting design is the 'natural' source.

Whilst an essential understanding of the role of daylight is the beginning, a knowledge of the various forms and properties of artificial light is essential; not only at night but during the day. In early buildings, there was one form of light - daylight - during the day and another - artificial - at night. No attempt was made to integrate the two. The situation today is different; there are many reasons for this, not least in the possibilities of modern structure. The book therefore has extensive coverage of day and night lighting and how it is designed to provide optimum solutions in building design.

A major portion of Derek Phillips' book is devoted to 'design'. Sufficient technical detail is provided in the book to permit an understanding of the design principles of each scheme. Schemes illustrated vary from small domestic buildings, churches and workplace, to those devoted to leisure and sport. At the end of each section a series of conclusions are drawn leading to a philosophy of lighting design.

* Learn how to design optimum lighting solutions
* Understand how to bridge the gap between architects and lighting engineers
* Discover how to integrate natural and artificial light sources
